Welcome to Ikorodu FC, Lagos.

Ikorodu - the town bursting at the seams.! Of a lofty ancestry and modern-day population explosion!

Ikorodu - a border town in Lagos lies astride the Lagos Lagoon, 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Lagos. It is bounded in its south by the Lagos Lagoon; in the north, by common boundary with Ogun State; and in the east, it shares common boundary with Agbowa-Ikosi, a town in the Epe division of Lagos State. As of the 2006 Census Ikorodu had an enumerated population of 535,619 which has exploded over recent years.

Ikorodu from all settled history was a farm settlement/outpost of the Remo sub-group of the yoruba tribe. It is believed, the name ‘ikorodu’ came from two(2) Yoruba words‘oko’ and ‘Odu’ - which translates to ‘farm of Odu’ or ‘Odu Farm’

An expedition of the royalties of Ijebu-Remo Kingdom, the Akarigbo of Remoland, had decided to explore southward and then came upon an uninhabited thick virgin forest which ended by a vast stretch of water ( the atlantic ocean ) and they became the first settlers there. The new settlement in the heart of a massive forest was first settled upon by the sons of Akarigbo, Koyelu of Orile Offin Shagamu – led by Oga, Lasuwon, Rademo, Anoko, Osonusi (alias Ogbonyari) Igimisoje, Otutubiosun, Kilaro, Oladepo and Sekumade. It is believed they found ‘Odu’ a now extinct specie of vegetable predominantly growing in the plateau from which they called the place ‘oko-odu’ - which translates to ‘odu farm’

Ikorodu became important in the mid-19th century as a trading post of the Remo (Ijebu-Remo) kingdom on the trade route from Lagos to Ibadan. During the Ibadan-Ijaiye wars (1860–65), the Ikorodu traders, encouraged by both Ibadan and Lagos, decided to break from their Ijebu-Remo overlords and smuggled arms across the Ijebu-Egba blockade to Ibadan (58 miles [93 km] north-northeast). In 1865, when the Egba decided to punish Ikorodu, British forces from Lagos intervened and decisively defeated the Egba army in a battle at Ikorodu.

It is reputed that Oga, the eldest of the Akarigbo sons at the time, was the head of the establishment now known as Ikorodu. He and his younger brother Lasunwon lived in a hamlet called Agbele at the present-day site of NITEL in Ikorodu. Agbele was also called Egure and so Oga became the Elegure of Egure. Lasunwon was Odofin of Shagamu. In some sense, Ikorodu belonged to Shagamu, the Akarigbo’s seat of power in Ijebu-Remoland for many years before it changed to the present-day arrangement where Ikorodu falls under Lagos State of Nigeria. Since its founding, Ikorodu has been ruled by the Rademo Royal Family and Lasunwon Royal Family.

Modern Ikorodu is a collecting point for locally produced fish, poultry, cassava (manioc), corn (maize), vegetables, palm oil and kernels, okra, cabbages, tomatoes, pineapples, and bananas that are shipped to Lagos. Many truck farms are located in the vicinity of the town. The commercial manufacture of pottery is a significant local industry. The town is served by highways between Lagos and Shagamu and between Lagos and Epe. Ikorodu has a strong tradition of arts and crafts, with skilled artisans producing items such as pottery, textiles, and wood carvings.
